Does the UMMC General Surgery residency program participate in the Match?
Yes, applications should be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) by the end of October.

Do I have to participate in the NRMP Match to enter your program?
Yes, the only way that one can enter the UMMC general surgery program is to apply through ERAS and participate in the Match.

How many positions does your program offer?
Six (6) categorical and five (5) preliminary positions are offered in the first post-graduate Year. Additionally, we offer one (1) preliminary positions in the second post-graduate year.

What are the recommended USMLE scores for Allopathic Students?
USMLE Step 1 first time Pass and Minimum 220 on Step 2.

What are the recommended COMLEX and USMLE scores for Osteopathic Students?
COMLEX 1 first time Pass and Minimum 220 on USMLE Step 2.

What if I take Step 2 late in the year?
Applications will only be reviewed if a Step 2 score is posted.

Does your program accept osteopathic students?
Yes, both preliminary and categorical positions are offered to DOs who apply through ERAS and meet all requirements.

Does your program accept IMGs as residents?
Yes, both preliminary and categorical positions are offered to those IMGs who apply through ERAS and meet all requirements.

Do you require IMG candidates to have clinical experience in the United States?
Yes, you must have at least one year of clinical experience in the Unites States to be considered for a categorical and preliminary position.

Would you require candidates to have clinical experience in the United States?
Yes, you should have at least one year of clinical experience in the Unites States to be considered for a categorical and preliminary position.

What type of visas does your program sponsor?
UMMC sponsors J1 Visas only.

Does your program have a cut-off graduation year?
Yes. All applicants must have graduated from medical school within the last five (5) years.

Does your program require two (2) years of research?
No, it is not a requirement.  However, we fully encourage and facilitate any resident interested in spending scholarly time outside their 5-year residency to pursue research.
